Update from PENG Committee HEF Clinical Lead

Sean White, PENG HEFT Clinical Lead

The Nutrition Support Outcomes working group continues to make good progress. We had a fruitful first face-to-face meeting at BDA headquarters in Birmingham in August. This meeting allowed us to establish the aims of the project and plan of action. Many thanks must go to all those dietitians who have kindly shared their examples of outcomes tools and guidance. These examples have demonstrated that some great work is already happening with regards developing outcomes tools. We should be circulating the first draft of the toolkit to members of the working group in the next month and hope to be able to present some of the progress made at BDA Live in March 2016.

We would still like to receive other examples of outcomes tools/guidance being used by nutrition support dietitians, so please forward them to the PENG HEFT Clinical Lead at: seanwhite1977@gmail.com.

PENG Research Grant Opportunity

Jacklyn Jones, Clinical Lead in Audit and Research

PENG award small grants to PENG members to undertake research, audit and service evaluation in the area of clinical nutrition and nutrition support. The money can be used to support aspects of running a project – project costs, equipment and for help with salaries. Exceptionally money can be awarded to support study at post graduate level in a relevant area and with a research focus.

We have recently awarded a research grant to Melanie Baker, Senior Specialist Dietitian at Leicester Royal Infirmary to undertake a Retrospective Audit of the Management of High Output Stomas at the hospital where she works. The results of which have the potential to inform a future research study in this area.

If you are interested in applying for a grant more details can be found at the PENG website: www.peng.org.uk/education-research/peng-grants.php.

PENG Pocket Guide to Clinical Nutrition

More information on the pocket guide to follow in future editions of e-PENlines, meanwhile should you have any comments or like to see additional topics being covered please contact us at: peng@bda.uk.com.

New HPN LinkedIn group

Alison Culkin, Lead for Parenteral Nutrition, PENG committee

  • Are you looking after patients on HPN?
  • Would you like to discuss aspects of care with other dietitians working in this area of nutrition support?

If yes, then please consider joining our new LinkedIn group so that we can start an informal HPN dietetic group. The group is called ‘Dietitians in HPN Group UK’.

We are aiming to set up a contact list of dietitians to share resources and audit/research ideas.

If you have any questions then please email me at: alisonculkin@nhs.net.
