Following last month’s letter outlining NHS England’s approach to the national review of adult intestinal failure services, we are holding regional workshops with providers and lead commissioners to discuss the proposed updates to the Adult IF Service Specification and the proposed clinical service model. This is to ensure that a range of clinicians from all providers have the opportunity to share their observations and experiences, identify issues and input into the development of plans prior to any potential public consultation. We have already held two patient focus groups to better understand direct experience using IF services, and we are following this up with a survey to ensure that patient views and experiences are central to the review.

In the IF Stakeholder Briefing, we mentioned our intention to hold a national workshop with all stakeholders. However initial discussions with clinicians have identified that some of the issues we need to address through a review are likely to be different for each of the four regions of England. Therefore we are initially holding clinical workshops within each region early in the process. We are keen that plans for intestinal failure are developed jointly with commissioners and providers working together and would like to invite members of your team to help us to shape early thinking. This workshop will also be an opportunity to update you on the first year of the HPN Framework, as although this is out of scope of the review, is clearly a significant interdependency.

Details have already been circulated to all Trusts, so we are sending this update out more widely in case information about the event has not yet reached you. All members of your multi-disciplinary team are welcome to attend, so please forward this invitation on to appropriate colleagues, however as we need to limit attendance to three people from each Trust please liaise with colleagues to agree who is best placed to attend.
